AMATEUR HARRIERS

! C.Y.M. CHAMPIONSHIPS XV. KEMP WINS JUNIOR TITLE OPEN TO H. PRIMROSE

(By “Plodder”) With fine weather in its favour, the C.Y.M. Harrier Club held its annual championship and sealed handicap race from St. Andrew’s Presbyterian

Church, Claudelands. Good times ■ were registered although both junior and e nior rc suits were rather a surprise to the majority of the club. The course, which was approximately 3$ miles, led into River Road to a point some 150 yards this side of the Fairfield bridge, taking a 45 degree turn across open country, coming out in Grey Street by the Fairfield Stores, then along and up Boundary Road, j taking a cut through the Juvenile Park into Hukanui Road crossing the railway lines into Station Road, ; White Street and Te Aroha Street, going up Argyle Street and Armagh Street across the East Gully into j Grey Street and finishing down Te Aroha Street. | At the start, L. Johnson, the title— I holder, set the pace from Kepple, | Sattrup, Bogue, Sundvick, Kemp and

j McKinley, but coming off the road : into the country Kemp came through. S He was then followed by Kepple, Mc- : Kinley and Bogue. From here on , Kemp was only once threatened by ! Bogue, who came through along | Grey Street, but faded badly in Boundary Road. This left McKinley, i Kemps’ main opposition, and for a time it looked as if McKinley might do the trick, but his lack of training ! compared to Kemps’ regular training, proved his main setback. The Junior Result , Nevertheless, he gave Kemp a great bid for the title, while Bogue, who had regained his stride, finished close behind. The main placings and times were: —W. Kemp, 24 mins. 55 secs., 1; J. McKinley, 25 mins., 2; C. Bogue, 25 mins. 7 secs., 3; Sundvick, 2G mins. 20 secs, 4; Johnson, 26 mins. !39 secs, 5; Thompson, 27 mins. 50 ; secs, 6. The sealed handicap was won by McKinley, off a 20 secs mark, Kemp off 10 secs was second and ! Bogue off scratch third, j One of the oldest members of the I club, H. Primrose deserved his win ;in the open tide and it was hard | luck that he had not been available ; lor the Waikato championships the i previous week. S. Kepple did well to j finish runner-up and it is hoped that 1 his run of bad luck will soon be ended. Jones, the third man home, did not run as well as usual, while R. j Sattrup, who put up such a good perj formance at Te Kuiti the previous week, disappointed. As this is his first j season in this line of sport much will be expected of him in future seasons. The senior results were:— H. Primrose, 25 min. 46 secs, 1; S. Kepple, 26 min. 1 sec., 2; E. Jones, '26 min. 9 secs., 3; R. Sattrup, 26 min. 39 secs., 4. The run next week will be from the home of Mr and Mrs Thomas, ' Rotnkauri.
