THE TURAKINA
REPORTED OVERDUE NEW ZEALAND BOUND DUE WEDNESDAY EVENING NO FURTHER ADVICE (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Saturday “The steamer Turakina, which reported on Tuesday evening that she was being attacked and gunned by a raider in the Tasman Sea, is now overdue at a New Zealand port,” said the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, in a statement issued late last night. “No further communication has been received from the Turakina,” Mr Fraser continued. “She was due at a New Zealand port on the evening of Wednesday, hut has not arrived.” The Turakina is an oil-burner and ir» equipped with refrigerating machinery. Under Captain J. Laird is a crew of about 60. She is the third vessel of the name in the United Kingdom trade. The first was previously the City of Perth, which was driven ashore at Timaru in 1882 with the Benvenue, but was refloated and renamed. The second Turakina was torpedoed on August 13, 1917 off Bishop Rock, soon after she had landed at Plymouth part of the 25th Reinforcements, N.Z. Division.
