NEW ZEALAND FLIER PLANES SHOT DOWN GREAT COURAGE SHOWN (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received August 23, 11.25 a.m.) LONDON, August 22 Pilot-Officer O. F. Gray, of Christchurch, has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. The citation states: “He has flown continuously on offensive patrols since last year, and participated in many engagements against the enemy throughout the Dunkirk operations, and subsequently throughout intensive air operations over Kent, also in protecting shipping in the English Channel. “J%e shot down four Messerschmitts and is believed to have destroyed a further four planes. “He also assisted in destroying one Messerschmitt and one Dornier.
“His example of courage and determination in action contributed materially to maintaining the high morale of his squadron.”
