LATE DR. HOCKIN
COMPASSIONATE ALLOWANCE (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) WELLINGTON, Wednesday The payment by the Waikato Hospital Board of a compassionate allowance of £6OO to the widow of late Dr. M. M. Hockin, who was medical superintendent of the Waikato Hospital, is authorised by a clause in the Local Legislation Bill, which was introduced in the House of Representatives today. An explanatory memorandum attached to the bill states that Dr. Hockin had been superintendent for 11 years. He had not for some years availed himself of the full period of leave due to him, and at the time of his death there was a considerable period of leave due. Prior to the late doctor’s death he was employed at an annual salary of £ISOO, plus free house. He was entitled to not less than five months’ leave of absence, and this represented approximately £6OO in salary, which the board felt under a moral obligation to pay, quite apart from its feelings of gratitude for Dr. Hockin’s long and faithful service.
