GOSSIP FROM ALL PARTS

The racing season in the Auckland Province will open at Ellersiie with the annual fixture of the Pakuranga Hunt. In Great Order Llandafl is reported to be in splendid fettle for his sprint engagement at the Pakuranga Hunt at Ellersiie on Saturday. Master Brlerly Master Brierly has been standing up well to the easy work allotted him at Te Rapa and there may be days of usefulness in front of the son of Musketoon. Will Have To Improve Etcetera is an acceptor for the Greenmount Hunters’ Steeplechase at Ellersiie this week but, despite the mediocrity of the opposition, he will need to improve on recent displays to make amends. Condition of Track According to Auckland reports the racing surface at Ellersiie is in splendid order for Saturday’s Pakuranga Hunt, having recovered splendidly from the severe cutting up it received at the Great Northern carnival. Won In 1938 Though he won the Jellicoe Handicap in 1938, Floodtide has been off the scene for a spell and may require racing before he is again seen to advantage. On Tuesday he worked well at Takanini and is bearing a healthy appearance. To Be Retired Majority bled again last week and It has been decided to retire him from racing. While his form last season was only moderate, he was one of the best sprinters in the Dominion as a four-year-old, winning at Ellersiie, Trentham, Awapuni and Stratford. Tooley Street Tooley Street is to contest the Adquired of him in his preparation. Hunt at Ellersiie on Saturday and if a surprise is recorded it is quite on the cards it may come from this direction. He is looking a picture and has been doing everything reA. Winder’s stable produced the Trainers* Success day) at 6 p.m. with the secretary (Mr most winners in the season 1939-40, horses from the stable winning 15 races and claiming 27 minor placings. Next on the list come A. L. Seifert, eight wins, 14 placings; J. F. Tutchen, six wins, 21 placings and A. J. Julian, six wins and 14 minor placings. Brazen Bold With the sting out of the ground, conditions will be right to the liking of Brazen Bold at Ellersiie on Saturday and with 8.4 he is handily placed to give of his best. He won the King George Handicap at Ellersiie in June, finishing on to beat Aero King and Flying Acre decisively. Avondale Entries Nominations for all handicap events of the Avondale Jockey Club’s Spring meeting on September 14 and 16, also forfeits for the Avondale Stakes, Champion Plate and Avondale Guineas, close tomorrow (Friday) at 6 p.m. with the secretary (Mr J. Rawson), Avondale Jockey Club, Victoria Street, West Auckland. Raceline Looks Well Raceline has been working pleasingly at Rotorua and the other morning impressed by his healthy appearance. He is to race at the combined hunt fixture at New Plymouth at the end of the month and it will certainly not be on the score of condition if he fails to show to best advantage. Young Paddon Since his success over a middle distance at Rotorua Young Paddon has trained on well and he should strip in splendid fettle for his Jellicoe Handicap engagement at the Pakuranga Hunt this week. The other morning he had perforce to gallop in the fog and could not be timed but it was apparent he pulled up well and his bright condition gained him further friends for his pending engagement

Black Musk Black Musk has made splendid progress since being taken in hand by J. Muir and he is to revert to flat racing at the Pakuranga Hunt, being handily situated with 7.8 in the Jellicoe Handicap. He has been striding along freely in his recent trials at headquarters and though he will be opposed to strong opposition he is not without prospects of springing a surprise, as, on the score of condition it would be difficult to fault him. A Gratifying Result The balance sheet for the patriotic meeting staged at Te Rapa on June 29 is now to hand and disclosed a most gratifying result, the profit on the fixture being shown at £2320 4s lOd. Of this amount £IB2O 4s lOd is left over for distribution (on a 5050) basis to the South Auckland Provincial Patriotic Council and the Metropolitan Patriotic Council, Auckland, after the deduction of the £SOO advanced to the Sick and Wounded Fund out of the anticipated profits of the meeting. The £2320 4s lOd is to be subsidised £1 for £1 by the Government. This figure was assisted appreciably by the decision of all officials to give their services free of charge and donations, including £l4 8s Id, a percentage of their riding fees, donated by jockeys riding at the meeting. A Remarkable Record W. Jenkins, who won the Grand National Hurdles on Limbohm, was originally apprenticed to the late S. G. Ware when the latter trained at Wingatui. Jenkins accompanied Ware’s team to Australia, and rode there with a fair amount of success. Increasing weight, however, has restricted his opportunities on the flat. He won last season’s Winter Cup on Catalogue, and in five rides over jumps has won three times. He won on High Peer at Manawatu, and twice on Limbohm at Riccarton. One of his losing mounts was on Tidewaiter at the Wellington winter meeting. Jenkins’s fee for the winning mount on Limbohm was £63, and Mr A. J. Toxward, the owner, increased it to £IOO. Jenkins enlisted some time ago, and is now waiting to be called up. Mr Toxward won the New Zealand Cup with Ladv Lucy in 1909, and he bred Star Stranger, one of the best winners of his day. Patriotic Picnic Meeting An interesting programme has been arranged for the patriotic picnic meeting of the recently formed Te Awamutu Light Horse Association Racing Club, to be staged on the Te Awamutu racecourse on September 7. Nine events in all are to be decided, the principal events being the Light Horse Cup Handicap, of £lO and a £5 trophy, and the Hunters’ Steeplechase Handicap, carrying similar prize money. Other events are the Members’ Hurdles, Pony Race, Drovers’ Race, Ladies’ Handicap, Amateur Handicap and Ladies’ Steeplechase. Horses entered must be owned, trained and ridden by persons other than licensed trainers, jockeys and apprentice jockeys, stablemen or persons employed in or about the management, training, riding or care of horses registered under these rules. Entries for al levents close with the secretary (Mr J. G. Wynyard), Te Awamutu, on Thursday, August 29, at 8 p.m.
