ENEMY WITHDRAWS
ON THE LIBYAN FRONTIER FIGHTING IN ABYSSINIA NATIVES AGAINST ITALIANS (United Press Assn. —Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Aug. 14 Dealing with military activities in Africa elsewhere than in British Somaliland, the Cairo headquarters communique states: “ Patrol encounters 35 miles inside the Libyan frontier resulted in the enemy withdrawing. “ The enemy also hastily withdrew behind defences after a short engagement in the Gallabat borders of Abyssinia, losing one officer and 32 of other ranks. The British losses totalled six.” Thousands of young Bedouins are offering their services to the British to fight against the Italians in the Western Desert. Many chiefs who fled from Italian rule in Libya have agreed to unite under the leadership of Dayed Idriss Elsenussi. Enemy Advance in Somaliland The position of the British forces in British Somaliland has not improved. The Italians advancing from Zeila have reached a point about 75 miles west from Berbera. , In the hills behind Berbera the Italians are attacking with vigour. British casualties have not been heavy, except at one point, where the enemy penetrated the British lines. So far the Italians' casualties have been heavier. The Italians advancing from Hargeisa are stated to be from 9000 to 10,000 strong.
