MINER’S FATE
VVAINGARO FATALITY EVIDENCE OF CAR DRIVER A verdict that death was purely accidental was returned by the coroner, Mr F. Harris, when an inquest was held at Waingaro into the death of Mr William Darbyshire, aged 54, a miner, of Glen Afton, who was drowned near Waingaro on Monday when the car in which he was a passenger ran off the road and into a stream. The body was recovered in the afternoon. An electrician of Glen Afton, Dudley Lylian, said that he and his wife and deceased were returning in a small car from Waingaro to Glen Afton. It was raining at the time and visibility was poor. The car veered and witness tried to correct the steering. There was no response to his efforts and the car left the road and fell into a stream. The vehicle was submerged. Witness said he got clear quickly and extricated his wife. He returned to the car to release deceased, but was unable to find him, although he thought he felt his body brush past him.
Evidence was given by Constables P. Clemence and G. F. Atkins that they searched the stream throughout yesterday and ultimately found the body 50ft. from the scene of the accident.
