NEW SEASON OPENS

LOCIIIEL GOLF CLUB IMPROVEMENTS TO LINKS With a large number of members and friends present, the Lochiel Golf Club’s links were officially opened for the 1940 season on Saturday. The surrounding clubs were represented at the opening, and the patron of the club, Mr W. I. Taylor, was present. A welcome to the visitors was extended by the president, Mr B. C. O’Connor, who congratulated the club on the progress it had made during the summer. An improved layout had been adopted and good work had been done in laying down new greens, and in additions to the clubhouse. In this connection, the speaker expressed appreciation to Messrs Moore and Hardy, of Cambridge, for their assistance. The interior work in the club house had been done by the members. Mr O’Connor made special mention of the members who had enlisted and wished them a safe and speedy return. A large number of the younger members was overseas or in camp, and the thanks of the club were due to them, as they had given a good deal of assistance at week-ends by taking part in working bees. An indication of the club spirit was given by the fact that during their leave some of 'them helped with the improvements. The president of the Te Awamutu Golf Club, Mr W. G. Parker, replied on behalf of the visitors. Afternoon tea was later supplied by the women’s entertainment committee. Mixed Canadian foursomes were played over nine holes, some of the players covering the first nine, and others the second nine. The club captain, Mr W. A. Scarfe, drove the first ball.
