SOUND LEADER

MR FRASER’S QUALITIES APPEAL FOR FULL SUPPORT An appeal to the people to give the new Prime Minister, the Hon. P. Fraser, one hundred per cent support was made by Mr C. A. Barrell, M.P. for Hamilton, when speaking at Frankton on Saturday night at a farewell to the stationmaster at Frankton Junction, Mr W. G. Stewart, who has retired. He expressed confidence in Mr Fraser as a sound leader. After referring to the loss to the country in the death of the late Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, Mr Barrell said his successor, Mr Fraser, was an excellent man and was going to make a fine leader of the Labour Party. “It is up to us all to give him one hundred per cent support, and I think he will get it,” added Mr Barrell. A tribute was paid by Mr Barrell to the manner in which the railway employees at Frankton Junction gave their services on the occasion of the funeral of the late Prime Minister. Expressing appreciation on behalf of the Government, Mr Barrell said he knew that appreciation was shared by the management of the railways. The General Manager, Mr E. Casey, had expressed his appreciation to the Minister of Railways, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan. “Our movement lost a great leader,” adcied Mr Barrell, in reference to Mr Savage’s death. “He has left us a great responsibility to carry on the work he started—the uplifting of the ‘under-dog.’ ” As a mark of respect to the late Prime Minister, the railwaymen at the farewell function to Mr Stewart observed a minute’s silence.
