BIRTHDAY SOCIAL

HAMILTON NATIONAL CLUB REPRESENTATIVE GATHERING Officers and members of the National Club had every reason for celebration on Saturday night when the first birthday of this very successful club was held in the lounge, the seating capacity of which was taxed to its utmost. Blending with the interior decorations, large bowls of exceptionally fine golden marigolds made vivid splashes of colour against the cream walls, and were much admired. The evening was commenced by Mr Hallyburton Johnstone, president, who was in the chair, extending a cordial welcome to all members and to Mrs E. M. Gould, president of the women’s section of the National Party in Auckland, and Dr. R. Mcllroy, of Auckland. Associated with Mr on the platform were Mr V. S. Gooseman, M.P., and Mr A. Sutherland. The following programme was much appreciated: Songs, Miss Helen Rapps; nigger minstrel show; songs, Miss Lois Avery; songs, Mr W. Tarplett; recitation, Miss Lorna Bridges; songs, Mr J. Whyte. The accompanists were Mrs H. M. Hammond and Miss U. Mateer. Interspersed through the preced-

ing items were speeches by Mr A. Sutherland, Mr W. S. Goosman, M.P., and Dr. Mcllroy on political matters, Mr R. Braithwaite onl the affairs of the club and Mr E. R. Roskruge on future social activities. Talk By Mrs Gould Mrs Gould gave a very interesting talk on the activities of the women of the Nationalist Party in Auckland, mentioning in particular a fair held just before the war broke out at which £450 was raised. Their war effort has been the opening of a lounge for the men of the forces, at which over 7000 free meals have already been served, the food and service all being provided by the women. This club, which is strictly non-political, is greatly appreciated by the men. Mrs Gould concluded by congratulating the officers and members of the club on the progress made during the past year, and by wishing the club every success in the future. A very pleasant interlude was the cutting of the birthday cake with its one lighted candle, by the wife of the president, Mrs Hallyburton Johnstone, after which a delicious supper was served. The evening closed with the singing of Auld Lang Syne, and a feeling of good fellowship and the anticipation of all of another equally successful year. Mrs Hallyburton Johnstone was wearing a frock of flame georgette, Mrs W. S. Goosman was in midnight blue lace and Mrs E. M. Gould wore a black frock embroidered in gold.
