SUPPLY OF ARMS
PRODUCTION IN AUSTRALIA BIG ADDITION TO FACTORY OTHER DOMINIONS’ NEEDS tUnited Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received Nov. 3, 3.15 p.m.) SYDNEY, Nov. 3 Sir Frederick Stewart, actingMinister of Supply, stated last night that next year’s production of heavy machine-guns at the Lithgow small arms factory, New South Wales, will be eight times that of 1938. He pointed out that portion of the needs of two other Dominions would be met at this factory, where nearly £2,000,000 is being spent on additional plant and extensions, giving employment to 800 skilled tradesmen. A British Board of Trade order which came into force on Thursday requires that goods imported from a number of European countries must have a certificate that they are are not of enemy origin and that there is no enemy interest in them. The order does not apply to goods which left their last place of consignment before November 5, and a number of commodities are exempt including all foodstuffs, feeding stuffs for animals, numerous raw materials, newspapers, periodicals, books, personal effects, certain samples, and bonafide gifts. * * * * The Air Ministry announces that Lord Nuffield has been appointed Director-General of Maintenance, and Mr Boden Deputy Director-General.
