CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH

COLLECTION OF REFUSE DUKE STREET WIDENING (Special to Times) CAMBRIDGE, Thursday The monthly meeting of the Cambridge Borough Council was held last night, when those present were the Mayor, Mr Edgar James and Messrs W. R. Garrard, K. L, Wilkinson, N. R. Souter, W. Moore and Frank T. Ray (town clerk). It was stated that satisfactory progress was being made with the construction of the new retort at the gasworks. When it was completed a much better gas supply would be available. In his report the engineer suggested that a clean-up week be instituted for Cambridge at an early date, as business and private premises were gradually accumulating rubbish of all kinds, and no doubt were now becoming harmful from a health point of view. He considered that by having a clean-up week residents would be allowed an opportunity of disposing of all rubbish to be collected by borough officials. In addition it is proposed to have a continued refuse collection once a week within the brick area, and once a fortnight in all other areas within the borough. It was decided to establish a refuse collection service in the borough, the cost of which will be borne by the council. Tenders will be called for the work, which will be commenced in October. It was also decided to hold a clean-up week in the first week in September. Duke Street Widening In a discussion on the Duke Street widening scheme, the Mayor said he had received information which would probably enable the major scheme to be carried out, whereby all buildings on the south side of the street would be set back by six feet. It might be possible to secure a two-to-one subsidy from the Public Works Department in connection with the cost of altering the building frontage. That bad been done in Te Awamutu. Councillors agreed that if the subsidy could be secured, the work should be carried out as soon as pos- . hie. to provide a 12ft footpath for the full length of Duke Street. It was decided to instruct the engineer to draw up a plan and estimate of the cost, to be submitted to the Public Works Department. Williams Street Footpath In response a petition asking for an additional street light at Thomason’s corner in Williams Street in view of inadequate footways, arrangements are to be made to construct a footpath, linking up existing sections along the boundary of the High School grounds. It was decided that the Power Board be, thanked for its ofTer to arrange for the installation of additional street lights in Hamilton Road on the understanding that payment free of in-

terest could be made within the next two years, and that acceptance of the offer be deferred until the lights now on order were installed. A request was received from the Volunteer Unit in Cambridge for the free use of the Town Hall on one evening. "While I consider that compulsory military training is necessary, we should foster the volunteers who are carrying on at present,” said the Mayor. He considered that matters in connection with defence and recruiting should be given a lead by local bodies. Hopes of building a unit of which ah would be proud were expressed by Company Sergeant-Major G. McDermott in the communication. lie detailed the y/eat need for an adequate uefence force and asked the council to give all the help possible lo bring this before the young men of Cambridge. The matter was left to the hall committee lo deal with.
