“Golden Boy ” - A Remarkable Play
All those who saw the play, and most of those who have heard about it, have been excited over the casting of “Golden Boy,” Columbia’s screen version of Clifford Odet’s remarkable play. Londoners will remember that not so long ago Luther Adler made a great hit in the leading part in the West End. At that time Film Weekly received scores of suggestions for the casting of the film version, the favourites being Eric Linden and John Garfield. For a while Garfield was actually under consideration for the role. Rumour was eventually at rest when an unknowm, William Holden, was discovered especially for the title The story is about a boy who is a brilliantly promising violinist and boxer. He decides to fight in order to make money so that he can study music. But success in the ring coarsens him. brings tragedy into his" life and kills his idealism. \ Barbara Stanwyck plays the slightly 60iled girl who is the romance of his life and his inspiration. Adolphe Menjou is his manager and fight promoter. Rouben Mamoulian is directing the film.
