IRON ORE PRAISED
DEPOSITS AT ONEKAKA IMPORTANT DEFENCE ASPECT (Special to Times) WELLINGTON, Thursday High praise for the quality of iron ore which exists at Onekaka was given by Dr. T. P. Colclough, technical director of H. A. Brassert and Company, England, who is at present in New Zealand, to advise the Government upon the possibilities of developing iron and steel works in the Dominion, during the course of a lecture at the Petone railway workshops last night. In answer to a question, Dr. Colclough said that there was 50 per cent of iron ore at Onekaka, compared with 65 per cent in Sweden, 60 in Spain and from 28 to 34 in England. “And I can assure you,” he added, “that the ore at Onekaka is not bad ore.” Questioned as to where he- considered would be the best site to start iron-works in New Zealand, Dr. Colclough said that works should be built where they would cost the least money. Many factors had to be taken into account. such as ore, coal and freight. “1 can tell you this,” he continued: “No country can develop industrially or make adequate provision for defence unless it possesses an iron and steel industry. It doesn’t require all the people of New Zealand to produce the meat, butter and cheese they require. In these days a country must have the means for its own defence. That is commonplace, and common knowledge.”
