WHARF WORK STOPPED
DIFFICULTY OVER LOAN HARBOUR BOARD ACTION (Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Wednesday Unable to obtain loan money for capital works at the Government prescribed interest rate of 3* per cent, the Auckland Harbour Board decided I at a meeting yesterday to discontinue work on the new export wharf off the eastern reclamation adjacent to the export stores being built by the Auckland Farmers' Freezing Company, Limited, j Between 150 and 200 men are at present employed on the work. Of ; these 50 will be dispensed with on I Friday and the services of the others J will he gradually terminated after that i date unless financial relief is obtained. ! The decision to cease operations | was made on the recommendation of j ; the superintendent, Mr D. Holderness. j ! whose report on the subject was . ; adopted. Mr Holderne?* said the Min- ; 1 ister of Finance, the Hon. \\. Nash. ! had promised to advise the board of the Government's intentions in the matter not later than April 8, but no ; I communication had come to hand. '
