ELECTRICAL IMPORTS
DIFFICULTY LIKELY APPLICATION TO MINISTER j Extreme, difficulty is likely to be experienced by power boards in se- ; curing electrical appliances and equip- | merit from overseas in cases where ' similar equipment can be manufacf hired in New Zealand as a result of . the import restrictions according to information received to-day by the Central Waikato Electric Power Board from the Electric Power Boards’ Association. The association was at present engaged in seeking the cooperation of Hie Minister of Customs, the Hon. \V. Nash, in ensuring that power boards will not be short of quipment. Despite the fact that it was almost ' certain that the local manufacturers i would not be able to meet the demand | for equipment when the full effects ; of the import restrictions come into I operation, it seemed uncertain whether i imports would be allowed, stated the association. As every effort was beng made to conserve the sterling funds in London, it was the Governnent's intention to assist local manufacturers. At the last of the Waikato board it was decided to urge the Minister to lift the import restrictions •n British-made electrical appliances •nd equipment until the New Zealand i manufacturers could meet the deI rriand. The Minister replied that the matter was receiving consideration. I Asked for their opinions on the J board's application to the Minister for ! exemption 20 power hoards sup--1 ported it, while others stated that they | were not vitally affected and only one j authority, the Nelson City Council, i decided not to support the application.
