MORRINSVILLE AFFAIRS.
BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS. TENNIS CLUB’S APPLICATION. (Times’ Representative.) MORRINSVILLE, Friday. The fortnightly meeting of the Morrinsville Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor. Mr W. T. Osborn, presiding. Also present were Messrs W. Hetherington. W. Morrice, B. Chapman, W. McPherson. L. Waters and the town clerk. Mr A. G. Sfrahan. Leave of absence was granted Mr T. Ryan. On the motion of Mr Hetherington _ it was decided that members of the F borough office staff would observe a five-day week as from the start of SeptemberThe secretary of the Department of Labour wrote confirming the arrangements made by the acting-Minister of Labour for a subsidy on the basis of £» per week to be made available for work at the recreation ground.—The letter was received. Tiie secretary of the Piako County Council Crippled Children's Auxiliary Committee advised tiiat it was proposed to hold a joint meeting of members of the Piako and Morrinsville Committees at the Morrinsville municipal buildings on August 23. A certain amount of discussion took place when a letter was received from the Morrinsville Tennis Ciub asking permission to hold a street stall in Morrinsville. “Personally, I do not think that the application should be granted.” said Mr Chapman. “The tennis club recently held a carnival which they said was a great success from the money point of view. In addition, I have noticed that ihey can afford to leave their equipment out in the wind and rain for months on end. Some time ago we decided that such applications would he granted only to charitable or educational institutions, and sports bodies do not come * into that category." Mr McPherson supported Mr Chapman's remarks and it was decided to decline the tennis club's request. A report from the town clerk stated tiiat to date I*lo9B had been collected on account of current rates. Tiie works committee advised, io reply to a request from the New Zealand Railways for re-consideration of the charges for water that it was unable to recommend any reduction to the present charges.—The committee's action was endorsed.
