MEETING OF COUNCIL. HAYES’ PADDOCK QUESTION. RUGBY UNION’S VIEWS. At the fortnightly meeting of the Hamilton Borough (Council last evening, the Mayor, Mr J. R. Fovv, presided. and also present were Messrs W. Bourne, H. Lafferty, A. J. Denz, W. W. DilHcar. F. Findlay, if. n. Caro, 11. M. Hammond. .1. E. Tidd, It. McCaw. F. Best and W. A. Curt ©‘is. Also present were Messrs W. L. Waddel (town ■clerk C R. Worley (borough engineer), J. W. Lewis (sanitary inspector), I. Webster (electrical engineer), J. H Rlshworth gasworks engineer), W. E. Nicholson (chief traffic inspector). Commenting on the engineer’s statement that lie had seen no work in operation at Hayes Pacfdoek the Hamilton Rugby Union wrote pointing out that It was allocated the use of the ground during the pleasure of the council in 1930. In May. 1030. the Union let a contract for the levelling of approximately five acres, the present playing area, and also for the ploughing and eradication of noxious weeks from the 10 acres. The price paid for this contract was £36 ‘2s Gd. Grass seed and manure were bought at a cost of £l3 2s 9d and pul on the ground. During September. 1930, a further contract was let for £lO las and in 193! further work was done at a cost of £l2 15s. making a total expenditure of £72 13s 3d. A further outlay of CIS was made for the’ erection of a dressing shed. Since 1931 the Union has yearly spent amounts in maintaining the ground. In view of these facts the union was at. a loss to understand the engineer's reported statements, the letter continued. The grounds had been let for tlie playing of Rugby football between primary school teams and also between young players affiliated, to the union and had, therefore, been solely : used for the recreation of tin* young people of Hamilton. No revenue whatever had been received from games played thereon and the maintenance of the playing fields had been done entirely by the union for th© good of the game and the enjoyment and recreation of the younger populace of the town. The letter was received. Registration of Dogs. The Hamilton branch of the New /•aland Poultry Pr■ ilueers Association wrote asking that the dog tax. where j such dogs are used by registered | poultry keepers for the protection of their stock should be reduced to 2s Gd per clog per annum.--'Phis letter \ N w a iso received without discussion.
