VALUABLE RAMS.

PRIZE BOUTHDOWNB IMPORTED. BREED IMPROVEMENT. Two notable examples of the Southdown breed arrived recently in New Zealand. These rams have been purchased by Messrs Kay and Hoban of Te Awamutu, from Mr J. Pierpont Morgan’s stud at Aldenham, Watford, Hertfordshire, England. A number of prominent breeders inspected the rams in Wellington before they left for the Waikato and were much impressed by the quality and conformation. The rams were imported through the Stud Stock Department of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company Limited. and arrived with a considerable number of stud Southdowrs which are being auctioned by other companies in Wellington. Messrs Kay and Hoban’s sheep compared favourably with any sheep in the consignment which they eccompanied, being typical low set Southdowns with good heads and hams and beautiful quality wool.

Both sheep were shown before leaving England and “ Aldenham 86 of 1933” on account of Mr P. G. Hoban secured first prize and Reserve Champion at the Sussex County Agricultural Show. 44 Aldenham 53 of 1933” on account of Mr W. G. Kay, also exhibited at the Royal Show secured highly commended in a very strong class Indeed.

This is Messrs Kay and Iloban’s second importation. 0* their first two imported rams, one was from the flock of Lady Ludlow', Luton Hoo anrl the other from the same vendor as the sheep purchased this time. On looking through the pedigrees of the two latter importations it is noticed that on the sire's side of,each ram the Luton Hoo blood figures prominently i ideal, while llic dam s* side Gallon Park owned by Sir .Jeremiah Coleman, and Sandringham, the estate of Hie late King are freely noticed. Messrs Kay and Hoban arc to bo congratulated" op making those importations. The diffusion of this blood into Waikato flocks must prove a benecial influence to the rapi lly-m----creasing iamb production of this con • tre.
