DISPUTE AT WESTFIELD.
STOP WORK MEETING. CHAIN SYSTEM INVOLVED. AUCKLAND, Thursday. A stoppage of work in the slaughtering department at the \Vestileld freezing works occurred yesterday, following upon a stopqx'ork meeting which commenced at 10 a.m. and continued tilt noon. when the manage—ment declared the works closed for the day. It is understood that the issues cancern only the slaughtermen engaged in killing lambs and sheep on the "chain" system, which has been in vogue since 1932. After killing, the sheep are suspended on an overhead “chain“ and pass along in front of the slaughtermen. Each man carries out a single operation, and the management has graded the work and the men for remuneration into three grades. According to statements there is considerable dissatisfaction among the two lower graded workers. They contend that there is too great; a dis: parity in the wages. and claim that a uniform rate should he paid.
