KNOWLEDGE OF PLANTS.
PRIMARY SCHOOL COMPETITIONS. COMPLETION OF JUDGING. The judging of the gardens in connection with the primary schools’ competitions has been finalised by Mr J. W. Connell, instructor in agriculture of the Auckland Education Board. In many the entries reached a high standard and indicated the very keen interest taken by the young gardeners in their work.

The basis of .judging was as follows: (a) Growth, 40 marks; (b) freedom from weeds, 15 marks; (c) cultivation and mulching, 15 marks; (cl) general (staking, parallel rows, edges, moulding, thinning, labelling, transplanting, protection), ‘2O marks; (c) variety, iq marks.
Competitors had to obtain at least SO per cent to obtain a certificate. The general standard of the plots judged was good, some plots were excellent; a higher standard was reached than in previous years; more attention had been given lo arrangement of plots and to general tlnish.
