MATRICULATION,
(To the Editor.) Sir, —I notice that some headmasters in the south have been criticising the matriculation examination papers, and I hope that, any discussion will result in some change being made in the examination system. A child works steadily all the year for this permit to go on to the university, b.ut if unwell at the time the examination is held, and unable to sit, then the whole of the work of preparation is thrown away—or at least a year is lost. That is very hard on the young student who may be fully qualified to pass. Sometimes girls, who are usually very conscientious in their studies, attempt 100 much, and owing to ill-health arc not able to do themselves justice, or even sit for the examination at all. I am told that these tests are not enforced at the big universities at Home, so could not some other method be adopted here?. —1 am, etc., PARENT. Hamilton, December 19.
