The Earl of Lonsdale, one of Britain’s most famous racing peers, is giving up the sport, and is also closing down his famous ancestral home, Lowther Castle, owing to lack of money. “ It costs £15,000 a year to run the castle, and I cannot continue to do it on my present income," said Lord Lonsdale. " For similar reasons I am giving up racing.”
