VOTE-SPLITTING
(To the Editor.) Sir,—“Preferential Voting,” in your issue of Thursday, takes me to task for stating that'the National Government’s debacle was due to Hie intervention of the Democrats and consequent vote-splitting. He challenges my reasoning, hut on his own Asuies he shows that 34 members ot tne present House of 80 represent a minority of their constilutents, a state or affairs which can certainly be largely placed at the door of the Democrats. As I pointed out in my previous letter, there is more in common between the Democrats and the Nationalists than between the Democrats and Laboura fact fully demonstrated by the announcement that the Democrats aie already organising to oust Labour three years hence. Despite tire contention, therefore, of “Preferential Voting” that I was in error in my conclusions, I am ■slid fully persuaded that had the Democrats stood aside and left the field m liic National Government and Labour candidates the election would have been altogether different that blue would have Had the ascendancy over pink.—l am, etc., ' _ E. D. EWINSSON. Hamilton, December 14.
