FIRST TEST

AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS. SOUTH AFRICAN TOUR. VISITORS’ SOUND POSITION. CHIPPERFIELD’S CENTURY. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. copyright. (Received Dec. 18, 10.45 a.m.) DURBAN, Dec. 17. At the close of the second day’s play in the first Test match between the visiting Australian cricketers and South Africa, Australia had played themselves into a sound position.. n reply to South Africa’s first inn 'nss score of 248 Australia compiled a 29 and at the close of play had dismissed three of South Africa’s batsmen m their second innings for 167 runs. When stumps were drawn at the close of the first day’s play Australia had scored 280 for the loss of four wickets, Darling'not out 51, Chipper-field,-not out, 4. ' Darling soon became aggressive when play was resumed to-day and drove Crisp to the boundary. Later he attempted a similar . stroke and Viljoen accepted a well-judged catch. Darling hit six fours and played an attractive innings. Oldfield went at the second ball, leg-before to Langton. Chipperfleld went along quietly and correctly. Crisp maintained express speed, bowling a couple of maidens to O’Reilly, who managed to keep his wicket intact for Chipperfleld. The latter, when 26, was dropped by Langton at short leg from Crisp. The First STx. O’Reilly had the distinction of hitting the first six of the match when lie lifted Robertson over the on boundary, and in repeating the stroke two balls later was brilliantly held by Rowan near the sight screen. Grimmett’s hand having improved, he w r as promoted to his usual place in the batting order" He was dropped before he was eventually caught behind the wicket. Chipperfleld reached his century in 158 minutes but shortly afterwards

played a ball on to his wickets. Ho hit seven fours. This is his first centum in test cricket and though it was not without blemish it was colourful. Fleetwood-Smith, lashing out wildly, was soon dismissed. Mitchell and Siedle started South Africa’s second innings promisingly, Siedle cutting and glancing in masterly fashion. The slow bowlers were soon brought into the attack but by the tea adjournment, when the score was 44 without loss, the batsmen were definitely on top. Siedle’s Bright Display. Siedle continued in delightful style on the resumption, sending up the 50 in 47 minutes. Mitchell, who had been quiet, was then unexpectedly run out, when he snicked a ball past Oldfield. Chipperfleld, at first slip, jumping behind Oldfield, was not observed by Mitchell, who attempted a short run when Chipperfleld threw in accurately, and Mitchell was out by inches. Siedle was not perturbed and hooked Fleetwood-Smith over the fence into the covered stand. Rowan was exceptionally quiet and most uncertain against Grimmett who howled six maidens in succession. Siedle continued with the greatest confidence until he was beaten by a prodigious leg-break. He had batted for 84 minutes and hit a sixer and seven fours. He demonstrated that the Australian slow bowling was not as full of terrors as it was made out to be. Change In Fortunes. Viljoen was never comfortable and his dismissal caused no surprise. The sudden change in South Africa’s fortunes had a calming effect on the batsmen but, gradually becoming accustomed to the slow attack, opened up the partnership realising 50 in 30 minutes. Nourse and Rowan were both batting finely at stumps. The wicket is now showing signs of wearing. Scores: — SOUTH AFRICA. First Innings . .. .. 248 AUSTRALIA. —First Innings.
