AUCKLAND—OPENS IN IDEAL WEATHER(By Telegraph.—Fress i Association.) DUNEDIN, Monday. Ideal weather favoured the opening of the match for the Plunket Shield between Otago and Auckland. Cavanagh and Saxton opened on a dead wicket, which was in. excellent order with the - exception of two patches at 'one end, where the overnight rain had found its way through the canvas covering the wicket. Cowie and Matheson opened the attack. The former’s inswingers to leg looked dangerous, but the score had reached 19 when Bush and Townsend were tried.
Cavanagh sweetly, square cut Bush’s first delivery to the boundary, but succumbed lbw to Townsend’s first ball. 28—1—13.
Saxton shaped soundly untli he snicked off a delivery to third slip. 'Uttley and Elmes played confidently, and Elmes drove Townsend for a four. After an hour’s play 44 runs were on.
Elmps reached seven when he was dropped by Matheson (third -slip) off Bush, and several overs later square out and drove him for four in succession, bringing his total to 20. Coxvle relieved Bush when the total was 58, and the change.proved successful, Elmes rocking one up on the •leg side. 63—3—22. Bndcock's Brilliant Batting. Badcock enlivened the proceedings -when he brilliantly,; square cut Cowie to the fence twice in succession, and some time later lifted a second delivery from Townsend -clean over the grandstand, bringing 20 runs in 12 minutes.
Townsend experienced his revenge two overs later; when Badcock was caught, on the fence. The retiring batsman caused surprise when he returned, the field thinking that Mills had caught the ball with his foot over the boundary, and questioned tne decision, which, however, was upheld by the umpire; Sound, Defensive Innings.
Leader partnered Uttley, who was playing a sound defensive innings, and 100 appeared in even time. At the Uincheon adjournment the score was 110 for the loss of four wickets.
