NEW YEAR PROSPECTS

THE MAYOR’S MESSAGE. HOPEFUL OUTLOOK JUSTIFIED. DAWN OF BETTER ERA. A note of optimism is struck by the Mayor, Mr J.'R. Fow, in his New Year message to the people of Hamilton. “ As the year 1934 is swiftly drawing to a close, one cannot help but refer to the position as contrasted with last vear,” says Mr Fow. “Although many started the year with forebodings and some predicted that it would be one of the worst in the short history of this country, we have come through maybe a trying period and can look foryard with confidence to the future. “ Nineteen thirty-four with its joys and its sorrows ‘ Its gloomy to-days and its sunny to-morrows,’ will soon be only a memory, and I believe its lesson, is that men everywhere, are earnestly searching for a solution of the many national and personal problems. The ‘ old things are not always the best ’ and a change in many things now almost sacred, may be expected. “Nothing 'can stop the onward march. The one great law of constant progression cannot be ignored, and our observation confirms the claims of history that through all the clamour of life, with its perplexities and problems we are surely (though perhaps apparently slowly), moving onwards to a brighter and. better era. “ In wishing all the readers a good new year, I feel justified in taking a hopeful outlook. The darkest hour is just before the dawn. To one and all I would say ‘ May happiness attend you through the year, a_s this message which 1 send you is sincere.’ ”
