Spain.
Another ■stormy year of political upheavals and civil disturbance was experienced In Spain In 1934. Conflict between the 'Catholics and Socialists continued, and a sequence of events culminated In the State approaching civil war in August. The 111-fated Catallan -revolution struck a blow against the Government’s agricultural policy which condoned the confiscation of land and gave little or no recognition to private ownership. : But the revolution ended In disaster, and the 'Government, under
Premier Lerroux, was considerably strengthened. However, it owed its strength 'to the large Catholic minority, led by Gil Robles, the dynamic young Right protagonist, who stands out as a leading figure in the year’s political events. Opposed to revolution, Robles has exercised powerful influence in Spain, and has drawn a large following to support his policy. He was able to wreck the previous Government of Don Samper, because he was opposed to its weakness in handling the Socialists, and his support Of Lerroux is conditional on his good behaviour.
