RATIONED TEACHERS
SCHEME TO BE CONTINUED STATEMENT BY MINISTER. BOARDS TO WORK OUT DETAILS (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. The Minister of Education, Hon. S. G. Smith, said to-day that he' had been giving careful consideration to the scheme for rationing work among teachers and had authorised its continuance during 1935. Certificated teachers who are not in permanent positions will he employed next year. Teachers appointed under the scheme will occupy positions usually filled by probationary assistants, relieving teachers and additional assistants. The working out of details of the scheme will be left to the education boards in consultation with the senior The Minister said he was pleased to be able to intimate that in view of the decrease in the number of . teachers not in permanent positions it would be possible to pay higher rates of salary to some classes of teachers than had been possible this year. Those teachers who are relieving in the higher and more responsible positions in the service will receive salary, as lias been the case this year, in accordance with the regulations relating to relieving teachers. Those sent to relieving pisUions in Grade i schools will be paid at the rale of £l2O a year.
Pay for Holidays.
All other relieving teachers, that is. those in lieu of probationary assistants, junior, assistants and additional assistants, will be paid at- the rate of £O2 a year. Pay for holidays immediately following any school term will be at scale rates for those teachers who have received scale rates for at least half of the term and similarly at the rate of £l2O a year for those who have been paid at that rate.. In all other cases holiday pay will be at the rate of £92 a year.
A teacher who, under the rationing scheme, is obliged to live away from his usual place of residence will be paid actual and reasonable ,ex'penses of transit to and from the place in which he is employed arid shall also during his period of absence be paid an allowance at the rate of £3O a year. Any teacher who does not receive this allowance and has to ' travel more than four miles daily to school will be paid his aotual and reasonable traveling expenses at a rate not exceeding £24 a year. Transfer of Teachers. Mr. Smith added that because the over-supply of teachers was not evenly distributed throughout the Do* minion It would probably be necessary to transfer teachers from one district to another. It would also be necessary next year to lay down the condition that If any teacher without reasonable oxcuso refuses an appointment or transfer under the rationing ' soheme he will not bo given further V employment under the scheme' for three months from the date on whioh the offer was made to him. The annual rate of payment of rationed teachers was raised from £6O to £72 as from August 1 last. They also received the 5 per cent increase granted to the civil service as from April 1. The boarding allovvance was increased from £24 to £36 a year, as from August 1.
