BRUTAL ATTACK.
JEWELLER HIT WITH IRON BAR. THOUGHT IIE HAD BEEN SHOT. (From a Correspondent). SYDNEY, December 1. A brutal assault was made on a Russian, Isaac Tonkonogy (53), in a jewellery shop conducted by him in Elizabeth Street, Sydney. I Tonkonogy was in Ihc shop when j a young man entered and asked for a pair of sleeve links. As Ihe Russian turned the man brought forl.ii an iron har wrapped in newspaper, willi which ' he slrtick Tonkonogy on Ihe hack of the neck. Toiikonu’gy yelled for lieip, though very dazed, hut his assailant made good liis escape. As I lie wound was bleeding profusely Ihe Russian ran across Ihe streel to a chemist's shop, where the bleeding was ■staunched. Subsequently he discovered that none of his jewellery had been taken. The
police found in the shop a jagged Iron bar, which was considerably bloodstained. , Tonkonogy said that when he was struck he pitched forward into the window on which he knocked to attract help, but passing pedestrians only looked at him. Wien the police arrived, the Russian insisted that he had been shot, although no revolver shot was reported to have been heard, and there was no trace of the bullet discovered.
