GENE SARAZEN’S VISIT. MATCH WITH A. J. SHAW. BIG iGALLERY AT ST. ANDREWS. The visit of Gene Sarazen, the famous American golfer, to St. Andrews links to-day, was a notable event in the golfing history of the Waikato and resulted in an attendance of several hundred people, many journeying from outlying centres. The principal attraction of the afternoon’s programme was an exhibition singles match over 13b holes between Sarazen and A. J. Shaw, New Zealand open champion. It was a rare treat for local followers of the game, Sarazen displaying a steadiness and brilliance of execution which held the spectators breathless. On account of the recent dry spell the course was ,not at its best, but most of the greens were in good condition. The match started after an exhibition of various shots by Sarazen. Shaw’s first was well up to the green, the American going through just into the rough. He played a nice second to within six feet of the pin, l but missed •the short putt. Shaw won the hole in three 'to four.

At the second tee the American got well down the centre of the fairway with his drive, his second lying dead on the 'pin. Shaw pulled his drive to the rough hut made an excellent recovery with his mashie shot. Sarazen missed a short puitt, - and lipped the hole, which was halved in five. Approaching the third, both drove splendidly Shaw laid his approach shot dead. Sarazen stymied his opponent on the green and the hole was halved in fours. Shaw one up. The New Zealander sliced his drive at the fourth, laying his second just short of the green. Sarazen after a good drive got his second just on the green. Shaw approached short but ■sank his fourth with a long putt. Both secured birdie fours.BRITISH TEAM. MATCHES IN AUCKLAND. (By Telegraph—Special to Times.) AUCKLAND, Saturday. The British golfers are playing an Auckland team at Middlemore to-day in perfect conditions. In the foursomes, the Hon. Michael Scott and Garnett were all square in their game with Menzies and MacEwan. McLean and Bourn defeated George and Coltman, one up. *
