She was seriously damaged in a violent gale. Her steering gear was broken and -she had a heavy list. The crew, according to advices, were in a condition of great exhaustion. The 'Cunard-White Star -liner As■cania and Jean Jadot, managed .to ■launch lifeboats while the Ascanla ■stood to leeward 'in order to shelter and assist 'them.

The message stated that two members of the Usworth crew were rescued from the water. Previously the Jean Jadot’-s lifeboat had rescued five of the Usworth’s crew and presumably it re-1, turned for more. The Usworth sent out distress oalls before dawn. ■ The Jean Jadot and the CunarcJ line Ascania are.standing-by. TWELVE DEATHS REPORTED. TWENTY SURVIVORS. USWORTH STILL AFLOAT. Twelve lives are believed to have been lost to-day In a raging gale along the mid-Atlantic northern shipping route as the rescue ships attempted to save the crew of the foundering Usworth, Reports to Mao'kay Radio said that tw’o members of the lifeboat crew from Jean Jadot were lost when the boat capsized while oarrylng 12 survivors from the Usworth. Ten of the Usworth men were drowned and two ‘‘rescued. Later. The Ascania has wirelessed that of 20 survivors from the Usworth, 18 are on hoard the Ascania and two on, the Jean Jadot. The Usworth is still afloat.
