THE TRUNK TRAGEDY. PROSECUTION’S FATAL OMISSION. NO MOTIVE SHOWN. United Press Assn. —klec. Tel. (Copyright (Received Dec. 15, 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 14. The ‘ Brighton trunk murder case, In which Miss Violette Kaye, the dancer, was the victim, has ended. The Jury returned a verdict of not guilty, and Notyre (ajian Manclnl) was Immediately released. Thus ended a squalid panorama of the underworld.
Mr Norman Birkett, K.C., defending counsel, contended that the absence of any suggestion of motive was a vital omission, destroying the Crown case. •Nolyre, when the foreman _ of the jury spoke words implying his freedom, seemed dazed and overcome. He placed his hand to his head. ■“ You are discharged,” said His Honour Mr Justice Branson. Oinly then did Notyre seem to realise the situation. He lifted his head, gave a sigh, and left the dock. The Judge, in summing up, had ordered an acquittal If the jury were not satisfied that a blow on the head caused death. He emphasised the absence of blood-stained clothes identifiable as being worn by Notyre when -Miss Kaye died, His Honour added that the jury must be satisfied that No tyre’s hand struck the fatal blow, but was it the action of an innocent man to nail up in a cupboard the corpse of a woman he loved, though not yet cold, Instead of summoning a doctor to try to resuscitate her? ' The Judge, in the presence of a huge crowd, who were striving to get a glimpse of Notyre, drove off two minutes after the delivery of the verdict amid the customary fanfare of trumpets. /
