It Is announced that Sergei Mironovich Kirov has been assassinated " by a murderer sent on behalf of the enemies of ,the working classes." Kirov, who was aged 48, was a member of the inner circle of Communist rulers. lie was a close friend and' co-worker of Stalin and was regarded in some circles as Stalin’s probable successor.

MOSCOW, Dec. 2

Kirov’s assassin is Leonid Vallilievich Nicolaev, aged 30, an ex-emiJloyee of the Workers’ and Peasants’ inspection Bureau.

Nicolaev burst into Kirov’s study at Smoiny Palace and shot him with a revolver.

Kirov was a notable orator and a stern Leninist. lie helped to defend Astrakhan in 1918 and also rout Denikin, and re-establish the Soviet in the Northern Caucusus.

The press extols him and all Russia mourns him. All the theatres are closed and the body is lying in state.
