AMATEUR ATHLETICS

THE HAMILTON CLUB. HINEMOA PARK MEETING. SATURDAY’S EVENTS REVIEWED. (By "Stride.") Before a very good attendance the Hamilton Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club’s programme of events was conducted at Hinemoa Park on Saturday. The best fields entered for the past couple of seasons faced the starter in practically all events. Again C. Goosman, who last season performed most creditably for a first year man, ran home an easy winner In the 100 yards', and to add to this 'fine win, he annexed the 600 yards and 'finished second In the 220 yards event. From a good start Jacka and Rika leaped to the front in the 100 yards. Until nearing the tape these two 'held their lead, when, with one of his characteristic turns of speed Goosman (2 yds) burst through to win, beating off W. Rika (4yds) by 2 feet, with J. Reid (i}yds) only 3 Inches away third. Without a doubt Goosman is right at the top of his form, and judging by his well-timed sprint, must rank among the first 'flight of sprinters in the Province. J. Reid and T. E. Mills (scr) both went good races, but the performance of W. Rika, who filled second plaoe, was perhaps the surprise of the day. With a field of seven In the 220 yards the racing was very keen. On entering the straight R. Paterson (6yds), shot to the front, and just managed to hold off C. 'Goosman (4yds) and J. Reid (3yds), who finished second and third respectively. For a new runner Patterson’s effort was a real gem. Without a doubt, with a little coaching he will go a long way. The rest of the field were either not fit or were not trying as the majority finished up well back. The 600 yards event was well contested by the three, placed men. Running bunched, there was no knowing who would win, until coming down the straight 'Reid gained a .slight margin to be overhauled by Goosman and Mills, the last two, going away to fill first and second places respectively, with Reid a close up third. It is interesting to note that the placed men in this distance event are the three top rank sprinters In the club. With only two starters in the threequarter mile L. Kippin ('4syds) and D. Silvester (3'syds) the race resolved itself into an easy run with the faster man gaining the honours in the sprint. Silvester was a shade the better and completed the distance two yards ahead of Kippin. The High Jump. Keen competition waged round the high jump. With a handicap of 81n J. Reid proved the winner, beating A. H. Maloolm (scr) and 'D. Silvester (41n), by the margin of one inch. Right till the last Jump the result was in doubt, Malcolm topping the bar at sft 4in. Others who performed well were T. E. Mills, C. 'Goosman and K. Results of the club cup competitions to date: — Sprint Cup.—'C. Goosman, 18 points; J. Reid, 10; R. Paterson, 7; T. E. Mills, 4; w.
