GHEE BUTTER.
MARKET IN INDIA. ATTITUDE OF GOVERNMENT. The Whangarel Chamber of Commerce, through Mr J. F. S. Briggs, one of its members, has for some time been actively engaged in an endeavour to have the possibilities of a ghee butter market in India investigated. The following letter from the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates was submitted by Mr •Briggs at a meeting of the chamber. “Tlie question of a ghee butter market in India is a subject which ties up with the legislation which we have before Parliament. It is not the function of 1 lie Government to itself •sell ghee butter, but It is properly our function to open up markets, by trade agreement and otherwise, and to set t such machinery in motion as will enable producers and their Interests to follow up these openings. That is the essence of the bill which is causing a certain amount of commotion, and is being assailed as introducing Government control." A letter was also read from the Department of Industries and Commerce. It stated: — J By reason of the adulteration which takes place in India, care must be exercised in basing any conclusion as to market possibilities upon the available information in relation to prices. Public opinion in India Is very much against the sale of adulterated ghee butter and hydrogenated vegetable oils, and it would appear that if New Zealand were to undertake the manufacture of ghee butler for export to India, It would be advisable to ship pure ghee only, and to leave any adulteration to the' Indian merchant? who trade in that commodity.” It was doeided to circularHte all New Zealand chambers of commerce gi\ing full information on the possibilities of developing this industry, #nd soliciting support.
