Hughes heat F. J. Perry, G—2 B—G. G. P. Hughes and F. J. Perry heat D. G. France and N. G. Sturt, 5 —7, G—4, G—l. Miss D. Round heat Miss N. M. Lyle, G—3, G—4. •Misses N. M. Lyle and fi. M. Dearman beat Misses D. Round and M. Maofarlane, B—G, 7 —5. . ■ Comment on Play. Hughes in his match with Perry found the slower court more favourable to his tactics. In addition, he served well, and his forcing strokes had length as well as speed. Sliced shots, which provoked netted returns, gave Hughes the two opening games, but Perry drew level with some attractive net work. Hughes, however, ran out a winner at 6—3. In the second set the English captain always tried ■to, steal the attack, being subdued only when Perry was able to increase the •speed of his shots. In his attempts at this, however, Perry lost a good deal of his accuracy, enabling his opponent to take the set and match. Strong forehand driving, combined with well-timed advances to the net and volleys which seemed infallible, gave Miss Round a lead of 5—2 in the tflrst set of her match with Miss Lyle, and site ultimately ran out at 6—3. Clever volleying and good length with her drives saw the champion in an early lead in the second set. Miss Lyle then speeded up her forehand for a •couple of games and many of her drives were almost unplayable. Miss Round, countered with beautifully accurate placements and fine overhead work to win the set and match. The Doubles. The New Zealand pair France and Sturt ‘captured the first set in their match with Perry and Hughes. France’s play was again outstanding. There were a number of lost service games in the first set, and, when Perry was broken through at G—s, New Zealand’s chance appeared bright. After many exciting exchanges, the Welling'ton players clinched the set with a ■perfect low volley which caught Hughes going in the wrong direction. In the second set service held to 5—4 in favour of Hie Englishmen. At this stage Sturt was broken hy clever service returns and the set went to the visitors. In the deciding set, Perry and Hughes infused more vigour into ■their shots. Botli France and Sturt had lapses in the return of service. The ladies’ doubles proved to he one of the most interesting .contests of the series. The winning pair favoured the net and baseline combination, and there were occasionally exchanges with the partners both playing forward. The feature of the match was (Miss' Round’s 'brilliant driving and Miss Dearman’s daring interception, at the net. . r . MATCHES AT CHRISTOHUROH. . * '*l ' ' ’ GAMES WITH ENGLISH TEAM.
