TRIBUTE TO SYDNEY. “ITS A GREAT CITY.’’ “GOB” SURVEYS SYDNEY. "Yes, it’s a great city, a great harbour, and a great bridge, too. As for you Sydney people—well, back' in the States the Fleet’s still talking about you,” said one of the 700 "Gobs” and 60 officers of the flagship of the American Asiatic Fleet, U. 5.3. Augusta, which arrived in Sydney recently. "We heard that Sydney was great,” said a boyish-faced lieutenant, "but we weren’t told half. You've something here to be proud about.” The Augusta, under the command of Admiral F. B. Upham, was on itts. way to Melbourne for the Centenary celebrations. One of the keenest "boosters’ ’is Admiral Upham, who in 1925 came to Australia in command of the Tennessee. “I am delighted to be back,” he said. "All of us who were here before have been eagerly looking forward to this return visit—your hospitality lias never been forgotten.” Said one officer: “Tell me—-is Melbourne considered Australia’s main resort? I’ve been told that everyone is going south to Melbourne. . . .” Sydney, he was informed, is.still Australia’s most important city. After all, a centenary occurs only once in 100 years. A salute of 21 guns, returned by the Royal Australian Art tilery flrom George’s Heights, was ilred as (lie Augusta steamed through the Heads. Later a salute of 10 guns was fired as the Admiral prepared to go ashore for formal visits. •
