RUGBY FOOTBALL

THE ALL BLACKS. REFLECTIONS ON REFEREE. MR. GEDDES’ REGRETS. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright SYDNEY, Sept. 3. The secretary of the New South Wales Rugby Union has received a cablegram from Mr. A. J. Geddes, saying:—•• j regret the gross misrepresentation of my remarks regarding the referees. No slight was intended. Nobody has anything but praise for our whole tour." Mr. Geddes, in an interview in Wellington on the return of the All Black;* from Australia, was reported t.o have said that illegal hooking on the part of the Australian hooker went heavily against New Zealand in the first test, which Australia won, 25 —11. The tourists could not follow the rulings of the referees, except in the case of Mr. Barnes, who controlled both games in Brisbane. MR. C. Q. PORTER’S COMMENT, “ SQUEALING ’’ DEPRECATED. WELLINGTON, Monday. “ I say definitely there was absolutely no call for It,” said the former All Black captain, Mr. G. G. Porter, who returned by the Makura from Sydney to-day, in referring to the complaints of some members of the All Black party about Australian referees. Mr. Porter confirmed the remarks he made in an interview in Sydney last week. When a team won “squealing" it was bad enough, he said, but when it lost it was worse. Mr. Porter said that while Mr. A. L. Irving, test match referee, may have been too technical in his rulings, he was the same to both teams. “I did not see any partiality on either side,” he added, “and I congratulated the referee afterwards on his fine display.” WAIKATO’S NEXT MATCH. GAME AGAINST TARANAKI. HOME SIDE SELECTED. The Waikato team to play Taranaki at Rugby Park to-morrow week, at 2.30 p.m., has been selected and one or two alterations have been made. M. Davies has been transferred to the Bay of Plenty, but Llssette, who replaces him in the team, is playing sound football. Altken has been dropped in favour of J. Wilson, and if the wingers now get more of the ball the choice will be a happy one. The clever insides are unchanged, and undoubtedly many people will make a point of seeing the match to see Waikato's inside backs In.action.

The pack has not been materially changed, and a great game can be expeoted. The Waikato team is as follows: —• Fullback.—Llssette. Three-quarters.—Oliver, J. Wilson, Allen.

Five-eighths.—Carroll, Solomon. Half-back.' —Russell. Back Row. —J. Wynyard. Middle Row. —F. Cassidy, A. Carter, Askew, Story. Front Row. —Sharpe, Palnton, J. Leeson.

Emergencies.—Settle, Peake, R. Wynyard, Muir. Thompson and Taylor were not available.
