RESTORATION OF CUTS.
LABOUR COUNCIL’S VIEW. ARBITRATION COURT POWERLESS. NEED FOR LEGISLATION. (By Telprr.mi.—Aasnrlnrinn.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. The contention that the Arbitration Court is powerless, in the absence ol’ new legislation, to make a general order restoring the 10 per cent, cut to industry all round, was made yesterday by the president of tiie Trades and Labour Council, Air J. Read, in discussing the trend toward handing back Hie wages reduction to the workers of New Zealand. Mr Read stated that representatives of Labour interests propose- 1 to wait upon the Government regarding the question.

Another attempt to persuade the North Canterbury Hospital Board to restore part of the wages cuts to its employees made by Mr W. P. Spencer al a meeting of the bead yesterday failed by one vote. Mr Spencer moved that Ihc decision of the board, made at the last meeting, not to increase by r> per cent, the salaries ami wages of lliose earning £2OO a year or -less should lie rescinded. The . motion was defeated by ton voles lo nine, but Mr Spencer announced his inlenlion in move at the hoard's next meeting that the wages of all employees receiving £IOO a year or less should be increased by 10 per cent. r ■ • r- '
