EQUITY AND WELFARE LEAGUE.
I I (To the Editor). Sir. —We regret that we cannot s follow “Equity’s" line of reasoning, f He says he “explained to readers that i it is evident that the League is acting j for the benefit of financiers at the expense of the rest of the community" i —we saw no suoh explanation —or we r should have at once denied it in the - sense in which he obviously intended - it. "Equity" should realise that “the t financiers” on whom we have to de--3 pend for loans, etc., really represent t a host of small capitalists who Invest y their savings. Official statistics p’'o\< i this beyond any dispute. Our orlgii nal letter did give our reasons for op- ; posing inflation. “Equity’s" denial of t this does not alter the fact. > His accusation that we advocated 3 more armaments is' not either fair or - correct. We showed —(i) how Brii tain had reduced her armaments as an i example; (2) how the Socialist War i Minister, Mr Tom Shaw, admitted that i the only way to realise disarmament i was by international action, that for t one nation to set an example was a i , “beautiful theory which does not work i out in practice”; (3) we then showed i that as international disarmament had i i failed the Empire leaders seemed to i realise the need for strengthening our t I defence forces—she is a long way ■ | below the standard of other nations. ’ "Equity" construes this into "advocating more armaments" whereas we , merely recorded facts and because , I did so he accuses us of serving the interests of financiers. If our summary of facts is serving ■ armament firms why is riot "Equity’s” record of facts doing the same? —We are, etc., N.Z. WELFARE LEAGUE. Wellington, November 8, 1933.
