Ip the House of Commons to-day, the Foreign Secretary, Sir John Simon, was asked whether a settlement had been reached in the matter of the recent importation of arms from Italy into Austria. The Minister replied: "The Italian Ambassador saw me yesterday about the arms recently sent from an Italian consignor to two Austrian factories, and informed me that the Italian Government was prepared to agree that the arms in question, which had been sent to Austria for the purpose of being reconditioned, should be sent back to Italy as soon as possible after the fulfilment of the contract for reconditioning. •, “ The British Government, for its •part, hopes that the question can be considered closed by general acceptance of this proposal.” The Austrian Government’s reply to the Franoo-British' Note confirms Sir John’s statement. Austria intimates that she will do what is necessary to secure the speedy return of the arms to the original sender after the fulfilment of the contract. The Foreign Secretary, Sir John Simon, informed the House of Commons that he understood the Austrian Government had agreed to the solution of the arms question which was the subject of communication between the British and Italian Governments referred to by him yesterday. In these circumstances he considered It would be preferable not to revive the controversy by publishing any earlier diplomatic correspondence exchanged oa the matter.
