AN AMAZING THEORY.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—-I very much admire the man who put forward the amazing theory as to the origin and formation of the earth, for two reasons—firstly, that he should have spent 12 long years in study of the subject; and, secondly, that he should have such a convlotlon of his Ideas, and such courage to make them publlo. Candidly I think the theory is too amazing to believe. There are many points In his argument, but although he says he has "evidence to support them-there is much, more evidence to prove the contrary. He seems to belittle the Ideas and theories held by the majority of expert geologists, who are clever and broadminded scholars. One of the greatest differences of opinion between the theorist and general thought Is the matter of time. Actually the latest estimate of the age of the oldest rocks Is In the region of 13 to 15 hundred million years. This was arrived at by the method of radioactive contents of Igneous rocks. There is also the evidence of the evolution of fossils to testify that some of the oldest sedimentary rocks are at least nine hundred million years old. There are many other points in the argument which the theorist wrongly assumes the rest of science knows nothing about, and he proceeds to make a poor explanation for it. In reality Taupo was a large volcano whioh sent out showers of pumice Avhich fell to the ground In the absence of water, as evidenced by the manner of deposition. There were also at various stages in the earth’s history certain periods of great volcanic activity, when mountain ranges were built and great sheets of lava poured out, but these did not occur in a day and there xvere great spaces of time between each period. Geologists are the only ones that are allOAved to make up fantastic theories, and they usually keep them to their own circle. Thus the public Is immune from them, but this theory should be examined thoroughly and compared with modern knowledge before being given to the ordinary man to believe. —I am, etc., ISOSTACY.
