DERATING OF LANDS.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —May I, before It Is too late, issue a word of warning to any ratepayers who are buoyed up by a wish to emulate Hampden, or propose to immolate themselves In the fiery furnace of Police Court proceedings? As one who for many years has regarded the present system of raising money by rating land for the upkeep of roads and hospitals as obsolete and archaic, I have every sympathy with those who are trying to get this state of affairs amended, but I strongly deprecate defiance of the law as the method to he adopted. What a precedent to set for those who feel aggrieved by the workings of laws which, rightly or wrongly, they consider unjust 1 What an example to set before any who may be lawlessly inclined 1 Pay under protest and bring all the pressure you can to bear In the proper quarters, but keep on-side and retain the respect, confidence and sympathy of those who are educating public opinion to the same ends, along constitutional lines. —I am, etc., OBEY THE LAW.
