MATCH AT NEWCASTLE.

The match at Newcastle between the English cricketers and Northern Districts ended 'in a draw to-day. When stumps were drawn yesterday the local side had made 322 runs in their first innings and England had lost eight wickets for 240. The visitors were all out to-day for 254 (Pataudi not out 94, Mitchell 32), Wright took six wickets for 79 runs and Walters two for 42. Northern Districts in their second innings made 236 (R. Little 117, A. Baker 50). Bowes took three wickets for 58, Mitchell four for 62, and Tate one for 49. Voce and Brown took no wickets.

The Englishmen were 68 in arrears when their second innings closed. Little, for the Northerners, hatted attractively. He pasted the deliveries of Mitchell and Voce, hut Bowes’ bowling troubled the local men as the ball rose dangerously.

Australia’s chances of winning the fifth test, which some critics consider negligible, received a hard blow when it was announced that the fast boiler Wall will be unable to play owing to a badly-bruised heel. His place will he taken by the Victorian speed merchant Alexander. The latter has captured twenty-five wickets in Sheffield Shield matches this season, at an average of 21 runs. Allen, of the visiting team, is also on the Injured list with a strained left side. The Englishmen re-united at Sydney yesterday. They are anxious to win the last test, thus drawing level with Australia in the total number of tests won.

FIFTH TEBT TO-MORROW. The fifth test match between England and Australia will be commenced at Sydney to-morrow and played to a finish. England has won three of the four tests played and thus has regained the “Ashes” which Australia won in England in 1930. The Australian team for the fifth test will be:—W. M. Woodfull, V. Y. Richardson, D. G. Bradman, S. J. McCabe, W. A. Oldfield, L. P. O’Brien, K. Darling, W. J. O’Reilly, P, K. Lee, H. Ironmonger and T. W. Wall. E. Bromley is 12th man.
