DEATH ROLL OVER 100. AIOSTLY CHILDREN EMPLOYED. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. SHANGHAI, Feb. 21. A ghastly industrial tragedy occurred this morning. A Chinese rubber shoe factory in the Aangtsepoo district of Shanghai was destroyed by fire which followed a boiler explosion. The death roll is estimated at more than 100. The victims were trapped in the burning building, which was a tw-o-storeyed one. The main boiler exploded, blasting the walls and causing a huge blaze, which severed communication with ’the upper floor. . . A second explosion then precipitated the majority of the 300 Chinese male and female employees —mostly children—into the raging furnace below. Seventy of the injured were taken to hospital in a terrible condition. , , A riot followed when a huge 'crowd of* excited Chinese friends and relatives gathered on hearing the news of the disaster. This resulted in indescribable scenes. The local authorities are making inquiries, as the lack of any faotoiy legislation in Shanghai prevents the proper inspection of Industrial establishments.
