PLEA FOR EXEMPTION. OMNIBUS PROPRIETORS’ REQUEST. (By —p<2 \ ssorlntlon.') WELLINGTON. Tuesday. A request Mhat they should be exempt from the extra petrol tax was made by the New • Zealand Omnibus Proprietors' Association by a deputation to. Hon. J. G. Coates to-day. The deputation referred to the already heavy taxation they were balled on to pay, and said that on account of . the very difficult times being experienced by the public it was practically impossible for the increased charges to be passed oh. As they were under license to carry on an efficient service they were at a loss to know what Lo do ir the increased charges were not limited. Mr Coates replied that personally lie could not recommend exemption at Hits stage, lie said that it the (>o\ernment found that the imposition or taxation was resulting in a diminishing return of revenue they proposed to take power to adjust, the matter without calling Parliament together. “ Wc are struggling lo square, our yards.” said Mr Coates. He pointed out that the taxes on spares, oils and tvres and the extra exchange were paid by other tli.ui bus proprietors. lie appreciated the points made, and would give further consideration to the matter before the bill came before the House.
