CIVIL ENGINEERS,
THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE. THE RISK OF EARTHQUAKES. (By Telparaph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. At a 'conference of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers the speakers stressed the importance of guarding against the risk of earthquake by introducing standard by-laws governing building construction. The conference passed a resolution urging ihe Government to pass the legislaton now’ before the House. Professor Cull said the Napier earthquake had revealed that the old methods of building construction were quite unsuitable for New Zealand.

CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. The 19th annual conference of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers opened to-day, 90 delegates attending. Air. F. T. At. Kissell, chief electrical engineer to the Publlo Works Department, presided. The annual report showed a total membership of 474, as compared with 470 in 1931.
It w T as decided that the next annual meeting be held at Dunedin. The election of officers resulted: — President, Air. 'F. 9. Williams (Dunedin); vice-presidents, Messrs. H. Vickerman (Wellington), D. Holderness (Auckland); treasurer, Air. James Afarchbanks (Wellington) ; council, Alessrs. A. .T. Baker, D. Blair, F. E. de Guerrier, F. AT. Gorki 11, F. W. Furkcrt, J. At. Wilkie.
