THE UNITED PARTY.

(To the Editor.) $ ■Sir,—lt Is pleasing to see that in several electorates In the Auckland Province independent candidates have appeared attached to the various parties. I fail to see any justification for the argument that sitting members should be sent back to the House because it is in the country’s Interests. If, party government means anything it surely means that the party which the confidence of the electors should ‘have a free hand to manage the affairs of the country. Today there is no party in the country standing for the broad principles of Liberalism and pledged to legisiate in the interests of all sections of the community. The United Party emerged with these principles, but has now effaced itself by submitting to Tory rule. As a result at the next election the country has to choose between a Tory Government (with a sprinkling of Uniteds) and Labour. The experience of Labour Qovernments in many, parts of the world, including Britain, Is unlikely to induce Now Zealand electors to pin their faith to Mr Harry Holland and. his colleagues. On the other hand the rank and file of the public should not be willing to stand another dose of Reform. What is needed is a strong Liberal-minded party to put the country on its feet again. To pretend that the present ■Coalition Government, dominated by Reform and comprising politicians of an intensely mediocre quality, can restore prosperity is suicidal. As the newest and most representative of parties, the United Party should enter candidates In every constituency to oppose Reform, Labour and so-called Coalition candidates. Any Government can spend money in good limes but the test of a really great Government is one that can weather the storms ofi depression. I hope the United Party will be returned to power with a big working majority for the benefit of the whole Dominion.—l am, ANTI-COALITION.
