BANKRUPTS CHARGED.

ALLEGED EXTRAVAGANT LIVING. JURY AGAIN DISAGREES. (By Telegrapk.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. The retrial of Washington Irving Carney, a woo’buyer, on a charge of bringing about his bankruptcy by unjustifiably extravagant living was resumed in the Supreme Court to-day, before Mr Justice Adams. Carney gave evidence in his defence, and was closely cross-examined by the Crown in regard to debts and withdrawals. “ I had every expectation of being able to pay,” said Carney. “No one could expect that the slump would last long. Not until May, 1931, did I know that my business had shown a loss for the year, although I knew that business was not as good as it used to be.” The jury again disagreed. The Crown Prosecutor asked for time to decide whether the case would be carried further, and Carney was remanded until Friday.
